Traditional operating models for private foundations leave much of philanthropy’s resources untapped in the face of systemic social ills. Heron President Clara Miller makes the case that the modern economy demands a different practice of philanthropy, one that avoids undermining with investments the progress made via grants. In 2012, Heron first declared its commitment to invest 100 percent of its capital toward its poverty-fighting mission.

Miller shares her experience of working toward that goal and discusses how Heron has merged its grant-making and investing functions into a single office of capital deployment.

Clara Miller, President, Heron Foundation and author of "Building a Foundation for the 21st Century"
