Roundtable Discussion: Aquaculture: Impact Investing Opportunities and Risks

The case for investment in for aquaculture is increasingly strong. Global demand for seafood is projected to grow 18% by 2020 and 70% in 2050 from today’s baseline, and the Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) projects that most new growth in global seafood will come from aquaculture. For environmental investors the case is even stronger. In addition to reducing burdens on oceanic ecosystems, aquaculture can offset global carbon emissions directly through sequestration and indirectly by competing with meat. This raises the prospect of coupling aquaculture with carbon markets.

Confluence’s Mission Fish Working Group, in partnership with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, has identified investment gaps and opportunities in the aquaculture industry including: permitting, capacity-building, and investor patience. The success of aquaculture businesses in countries like Norway and Denmark suggests that entrepreneurship, good management practices, and gains in technology can make these investments highly competitive.

We would like to invite you to attend a roundtable discussion our Mission Fish Working Group is organizing at the Woodcock Foundation in New York on September 25th, which will discuss mission-related investing opportunities in aquaculture – both domestically and internationally.
