Engaging Big Tech to Protect Personal Data

As responsible investors, many of our portfolios hold tech industry giants. However, despite the benefits that technology brings to society, an unregulated tech sector can cause significant harm. One example is the collection of a wide range of personal data and the myriad of ways it is used by tech companies, which can lead to discrimination and disinformation. Though this has been the case for many years, there remains a lack of industry standards, policies, and regulatory bodies to ensure accountability and provide governance over technology’s impact on the public. This discussion will give an overview of recent shareholder trends toward creating more accountable tech companies.

About the series:

Knowing what you own and utilizing your shareholder rights can translate into real-world changes in those companies, creating ripples that can influence new corporate standards, practices, and supply chains, helping shift how companies — or even whole industries — manage social and environmental risks. Active owners, or engaged shareholders, do this by exercising their power to proxy voting, by filing shareholder proposals, and through corporate advocacy and engagements. Please join us for a series of member-only virtual discussions on the important shareholder campaigns taking place in our community. Together, we will strategize how we can engage on the issues that matter most to us.
